PLC's & LARGER COMPANIES

Let us consider the position of the large Plc. Whilst a full security team may be in place, it is most unlikely that even the Chief Security Officer will have more than a passing knowledge of electronic surveillance devices. Indeed it is correct to say very few CSO's would recognise a disguised transmitter, say a pocket calculator, even if it were placed on their desk. This is no reflection on the abilities of the CSO, security is a very wide field and no one person can hope to be expert in all aspects. The Chief Security Officer may well have a counter surveillance receiver, handed down by his predecessor, but probably does not fully understand its capabilities and limitations nor has he ever had the benefit of first hand training in the use of such equipment.

For this reason most major companies rely on at least one professional 'sweep' per year. To achieve maximum results it is important this 'sweep' be carried out whilst the office is closed and without prior warning to all but a few key directors. Using this method will achieve several beneficial results such as:
The in-house buggist will not be forewarned to remove any devices he may have placed.

The sweep team see the 'real' situation and are, therefore, able to make valuable observations on general security such as unlocked desks and filing cabinets, key placements, boardroom security and most important of all, the overnight security of confidential documents.

Maximum search techniques can be used without disrupting the normal day to day office routine.

I.P.S. engineers are trained to leave no evidence of their visit, all equipment, down to the smallest screwdriver, is checked in and out by the team leader before leaving the premises. Where necessary, digital pictures are taken beforehand to ensure any items disturbed are replaced exactly.

THE SMALLER COMPANY

Invariably the smaller company will have absolutely no equipment or defence against the buggist. In many cases the most elementary security precautions will not be taken. It is here the Company's engineers can be most helpful in giving general security advice of the type that consists of basic common sense rather than huge capital investment.

A great deal of our work consists of sweeping three or four main offices. For example, Managing Director, Finance Director and Sales Director's offices together with the Meeting\Boardroom and 'key' telephone extensions and fax line.

THE INDIVIDUAL

We have various clients ranging from very high profile personalities to individuals who for various reasons suspect their security may be compromised by electronic means. In many cases the threat is seen as the media or litigants in expensive law suits. In many cases these clients will initially have absolutely no knowledge of the types of ‘attack’ that can take place.
