It is our opinion there are less than ten companies in the UK capable of carrying out a competent technical countermeasures sweep. Yes, you will see dozens of private detectives advertising de-bugging services in the Yellow Pages but, few will have any equipment and most will have absolutely no experience in this very technical area. They are merely 'Jack of all trades' attempting to take advantage of what they see as a lucrative opportunity.

I.P.S. along with the other major sweep teams in the UK, are very definitely not members of the so called ATSCP (Association of Technical Surveillance Countermeasures Professionals)

However, it is very easy to ascertain the creditability of a search team by asking just two simple questions.

In the UK, the only acceptable answer to this question would be one of the following:

  • Oscor 5000 Spectral Correlator
  • Scanlock ECM
  • Ranger 2+2
  • Spectrum ECM
  • Spectrum Analyser
(Any one of the above units cost between £10,000 and £50,000 but are essential equipment without which, an efficient ‘sweep’ cannot be carried out)

Acceptable answers are:
  • Orion
  • Audiotell Broom
  • Locator/Hawk
(Again this equipment is essential and costs around £10,500 per unit.)

The non-professional will make up a variety of excuses as to why his equipment is better or why he doesn’t use an NLJD but the fact remains that all of the professional teams will have, at the very minimum, one item from each of these lists.
